Develop a Young Person and Become a Mentor

Develop Me is Birmingham Children’s Trust’s mentoring programme for young people in care and care leavers aged 16–25. We’re looking for volunteers who can be a consistent, encouraging person a young person can count on — someone who will listen, guide, and believe in them.

You don’t need formal qualifications — just life experience, reliability, and the passion to help someone reach their full potential.

What You’ll Do

As a Develop Me Mentor, you will be a trusted presence for your mentee. You’ll listen without judgement, encourage their ambitions, and help them set realistic goals.

You’ll support them in exploring career, education, and training opportunities, while sharing practical advice — from budgeting to job hunting to building confidence. Along the way, you’ll celebrate their achievements and reflect on how far they’ve come.

How the Programme Works

We’ll match you with a young person based on shared interests and needs. You’ll meet regularly — in person or online — and use Mentorloop (our simple online tool) to record meetings, goals, and progress.

You’ll also have opportunities to join monthly workshops, mentor catch-ups, and days out. We ask for 1–2 hours a week for at least 12 months — consistency is key to building trust.

What We Want

We want you to motivate, guide, and support mentees to achieve positive goals and develop life skills. You’ll promote health and wellbeing, act as a positive role model, and build a supportive relationship that inspires them to recognise their own potential and believe they can achieve it.

What We Offer

We provide full training in mentoring, safeguarding, and relationship building, plus ongoing support from the Develop Me team. You’ll have the chance to take part in events and activities with your mentee, and make a lasting difference in a young person’s life.
